So true. Why does this remind me of John Lennon's working class heroe? Probably the "As soon as you're born, the make you feel sad" line I suppose.

I guess Larkin can be seen as a contemporary of John Lennon. He produced his best work at about the same time Lennon did. Larkin doesn't seem to have been the most pleasant of characters but some of his poems have a resonance of their own.
My son just started school this week and I guess the thoughts of this event in his life brought 'This be the verse' to my mind.
